Can my boss prohibit me from talking about my pay with other employees?

As of right now, yes. However, there is a bill in the Connecticut legislature that would make these rules unlawful.

The legislature has taken up this issue as a matter of fairness. If you can’t talk about your pay, you may well not find out if you’re being paid less than another employee for discriminatory reasons. For example, if female employees are being paid less, and are prohibited from asking their male counterparts about their pay, how can they learn that discrimination is taking place and act to remedy it?

Employers don’t always like rules like this, because they want “flexibility” in how they compensate their employees; e.g., paying an employee who has a degree more than an employee who does not. However, if the employer is paying more or less based on legitimate factors, why prevent employees from talking about it?
