With all of the uproar over Baby Prince George, we ask: What laws apply to babysitters?
Casual employment in the form of babysitting is subject to different laws than most employment- for example, the child labor restrictions and minimum wages provided in the federal Fair Labor Standards Act do not apply to babysitters. Also, parents don’t need to provide workers’ compensation insurance to their babysitters (despite the occasional toddler bite). You may also have to withhold taxes, known as the “Nanny Tax”- read more here.
Sadly, domestic workers (usually female and often foreign) are often subject to abuse by their employers, according to a report by Human Rights Watch.
